From Steve

Without knowing the precise battalion it is difficult to pin your relation down to an exact area. Having looked at the book 'The Somme the day by day account' by Chris McCarthy I can confirm the 8th Somerset Light Infantry [8/SLI] and the 1st Somerset L.I. were in action on the first day of the Somme offensive.

Saturday 1 July 1916. Attack on the village of Fricourt on the Somme.

Two companies of 4/Middlesex [battalion on the right of the 8/SLI] attempted to crawl forward into no mans land five minutes before zero hour, but were forced back by machine gun fire. One minute before zero hour they attacked in ernest and despite machine gun fire reached the German support line. Small parties totalling 40 men in all, reached the sunken road. The survivors of the rear company of the Middlesex only got as far as the German front line, but consolidated their position and repelled three German bombing [hand grenade] attacks. The 8/ Somerset Light Infantry on the left also suffered heavily in the assault, but also managed to reach the support trench and beyond.

8/SLI. Formed at Taunton 20-10-14 went to Halton Park, near Tring in 63rd Brigade, 21st Division. November 1914 went to billets in Leighton Buzzard. April 1915 Halton Park. August 1915 Witley Camp. 10-9-15 landed at Le Havre. 8-7-16 with 63rd Brigade to 37th Division.

Saturday 1 July 1916. Attack on Redan Ridge near Serre on the Somme.

At 7.40 a.m. the support battalion started. On the right 1st Hampshires were stopped by machine gun fire. In the centre 1st Somerset L.I. moved right as as no mans land was being swept by machine gun fire, and reinforced the Quadrilateral, penetrating to Feste Soden and occupying 300 yards of it. The 1/6 Royal Warwicks also supported the Quadrilateral but the left flank was enfiladed [under fire from the side] from Serre by machine gun fire and was forced to fight off a bombing counter attack, also from the direction of Serre.

This was originally a battalion of professional soldiers. 4-8-14 Colchester, 11th brigade. 4th Division 17 August, Harrow. 22-8-14 landed at Le Havre. Remained on Western Front throughout the war.

Hope this is of use. Steve.
